How many people live in Kurram? The 2023 census records 785,434 people in Kurram District. That is a district figure for a particular census year. A number for Parachinar town, Sadda town or one tehsil answers a different question. See the original PBS administrative table.
This guide makes those distinctions easier to use. You will find the district and regional totals, learn why apparently conflicting town figures can both be correctly labelled, and get a simple method for checking statistics before using them in an assignment, article or community discussion.
Start with the district and its three regions
The census administrative table lists Kurram District and three tehsil units: Central Kurram F.R., Lower Kurram and Upper Kurram. We use the familiar regional names in the navigation, while retaining the source’s administrative wording when explaining its rows. A region is a useful way to browse CKP; the table label tells you exactly what was counted.
| Census unit | Population in 2023 | Share of district total |
|---|---|---|
| Central Kurram F.R. Tehsil | 358,670 | 45.7% |
| Upper Kurram Tehsil | 275,819 | 35.1% |
| Lower Kurram Tehsil | 150,945 | 19.2% |
| Kurram District | 785,434 | 100% |
Population totals are from PBS Table 1, PDF p. 4. CKP calculated each share by dividing the regional total by 785,434 and rounding to one decimal place. The three regional totals add up to the district total. These shares describe the distribution of counted people; they are not measures of prosperity or the quality of public services.
A larger total can help frame a service-planning question, but it cannot answer it alone. School access, for example, also depends on where families live, pupils’ ages, school capacity and the journeys between settlements. Those details need education and locality evidence alongside a population table.
Census 2023 population by recorded sex category
These figures keep every sex category published in the source. The three tehsils add up to the district total; do not add the district row to the tehsil rows.
| Area | Male | Female | Transgender | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kurram District | 406,914 | 378,505 | 15 | 785,434 |
| Upper Kurram | 138,737 | 137,079 | 3 | 275,819 |
| Central Kurram | 190,453 | 168,210 | 7 | 358,670 |
| Lower Kurram | 77,724 | 73,216 | 5 | 150,945 |
Source: Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, Census 2023, KP Table 9, each area’s “All localities” rows and “Total population” column. Cross-checked against the “All ages” total columns in KP Table 5. The source calls Central Kurram “Central Kurram F.R Tehsil”. Figures checked 5 November 2026.
Parachinar and Sadda are different census units
PBS separately lists urban localities in Table 2. Parachinar TC has a population of 5,583 in that table (PDF p. 2), while Sadda TC has 39,888 (PDF p. 1). TC means town committee in the source label. Neither number should be relabelled as the population of its entire surrounding tehsil.
For navigation, follow Kurram District → Upper Kurram → Parachinar, or Kurram District → Lower Kurram → Sadda. The place path explains where a town belongs. It does not mean that the town and every surrounding village share one census boundary. The place register keeps those connections visible.
This is why a headline such as “Parachinar has 785,434 people” would lose essential information. The district total and the town-committee total count different areas. State the unit in the sentence, rather than relying on a reader to find it later in a footnote.
A planning boundary can produce another valid number
The Parachinar master plan uses a wider study area made up of seven neighbourhood councils. Its population discussion gives a 2017 baseline of 52,729 for that area and an area of 34.03 square kilometres. Read PDF pp. 53–54 for its boundary and council table.
That planning baseline is not a replacement for Parachinar TC in Census 2023. It uses a different year and a larger outline. Subtracting 5,583 from 52,729 and calling the result population decline would therefore compare unlike things. A meaningful change calculation needs the same geographic unit, comparable definitions and a clear pair of dates.
Use a planning-area figure when discussing that plan’s study area, and a census-unit figure when discussing the corresponding census unit. If a source changes its boundary, explain that change before comparing its totals. A short boundary note can prevent a much larger misunderstanding.
Rural and urban describe census classifications
Table 1 separates Kurram’s 2023 total into 739,963 rural and 45,471 urban residents. Its urban total equals the two town-committee populations listed above. These are the classifications in the census table, not a judgement about how modern, connected or important a settlement is. Read the rural and urban columns.
A settlement outside a town-committee boundary can still have busy shops, schools or close connections with a nearby town. Equally, a district-wide average can hide very different travel distances. When a question is about everyday access, the next step is to examine settlements and services, rather than treating “rural” as a full description of people’s lives.
The census also publishes rural-locality tables. Names there need their full context. In the Kurram section, separately named localities should be kept separate until their units and boundaries have been matched. Finding one familiar word in a provincial table is not enough to identify a village.
What a population total can and cannot explain
A total tells us how many people the source counted within its definitions. It does not, by itself, tell us why a population changed, how many people moved, how many jobs are available, or whether a particular project is needed. Those are further research questions. Keeping them separate makes the number more useful.
For instance, a claim about school provision needs evidence about schools and pupils. A claim about employment needs an appropriate labour or household source. Dividing a district population by a visible list of facilities may produce a calculation, but the result is meaningful only if the list is complete, its date matches and its coverage is understood.
When CKP calculates a percentage, we label the method. When a source presents an estimate or projection, we retain that label. A forecast is a statement about an assumed future; a census observation belongs to its recorded year. Neither should quietly become a claim about today.
One thing you can do this week
Choose one Kurram statistic you plan to use and build a four-part source note: place, year, unit and source. For the main figure in this article, that becomes “Kurram District; Census 2023; people; PBS KP Table 1, PDF p. 4”. Keep that note next to the number in your draft.
- Open the original table and find the complete district heading.
- Read across the row and check the column label.
- Record whether the figure is observed, estimated, projected or calculated.
- Use a matching boundary and definition before comparing it with another year.
Then follow a more specific question through the district guide or source library. A good statistic should help you ask a better question, as well as answer the first one.
Frequently asked questions
What is Kurram District’s population in Census 2023?
PBS Table 1 records 785,434 people for Kurram District.
Is Parachinar TC the same area as Upper Kurram?
No. Parachinar TC is an urban locality. Upper Kurram is the wider tehsil unit.
Why does the master plan show a different Parachinar population?
Its seven-council study area and 2017 baseline differ from the 2023 town-committee unit. Keep both the boundary and year attached to each figure.
